The Southern Literary Messenger, Volume I., 1834-35

Before there was a distinct American literature, there were regional ambitions. The Southern Literary Messenger, founded in Richmond, Virginia in 1834, set out to prove that the South could produce literature worthy of the name. This first volume gathers poetry, fiction, criticism, and essays that attempt something radical for the era: the creation of a self-consciously Southern literary tradition. The contributors wrote with something to prove, that the young nation needed more than Northern literary voices, that Dixie had stories, poets, and thinkers equal to any. The result is a fascinating time capsule of literary ambition, regional pride, and the cultural formation of the antebellum South. Here you will find the earliest efforts of writers who would help define Southern letters for generations, grappling with questions of identity, tradition, and what it means to build a literature from the ground up. For readers interested in the origins of American regional literature, the cultural politics of the 1830s, or the forgotten beginnings of a literary tradition that would later produceFaulkner and Flannery O'Connor, this Messenger is a foundational artifact.
