The Smithport Landing Site: An Alto Focus Component in De Soto Parish,…

A meticulous archaeological excavation report documenting the Smithport Landing Site in De Soto Parish, Louisiana. Clarence H. Webb presents systematic findings from excavations of this Alto Focus component, detailing the material culture that has guided our understanding of this enigmatic prehistoric culture. The study examines distinct pottery typologies, burial customs, and the environmental landscape that sustained this community. Webb situates the site within broader regional patterns, offering scholars a carefully documented window into Late Prehistoric period lifeways in the lower Mississippi Valley. The work remains a foundational reference for understanding Alto Focus chronology, settlement patterns, and the cultural relationships between this Louisiana manifestation and contemporaneous Southeastern societies.
