The Roman Index of Forbidden Books

For over four centuries, the Catholic Church maintained a blacklist that determined what millions of faithful could legally read. The Roman Index of Forbidden Books was not merely a list but a gatekeeping apparatus that shaped literature, science, philosophy, and the very thinking of an era. Betten, writing in the early 20th century when the Index still stood, offers a rare insider's account of this institution: its origins in the Counter-Reformation, its procedures for condemning works, and its staggering scope, which ranged from obvious heresies to Galileo's astronomical papers to the novels of Balzac. This is a book about the power of censorship, but also about the allure of the forbidden. Why did the Church deem certain texts so dangerous? What did readers risk by reading them? Betten illuminates a hidden chapter in the history of ideas, one that reveals not just what the Church feared, but what it meant to be a Catholic intellectual navigating a world of banned knowledge. For historians of religion, scholars of censorship, and anyone fascinated by the hidden infrastructure of power over the written word.
