The Revival of Irish Literatureaddresses by Sir Charles Gavan Duffy, K.c.m.g, Dr. George Sigerson, and Dr. Douglas Hyde

A collection of addresses written in the late 19th century. The work focuses on the significant cultural and literary revival aimed at rekindling interest and pride in Irish literature and identity following the devastating impact of the Great Famine. It addresses the responsibility of younger generations to continue the efforts of their predecessors in cultivating a rich literary tradition that speaks to the experiences and aspirations of the Irish people. The beginning of this literary work features an address by Sir Charles Gavan Duffy, emphasizing the importance of literature in shaping national identity and character among the Irish. Duffy reflects on the cultural paralysis caused by the famine and urges young Irishmen to embrace their literary heritage, advocating for the publication of works that genuinely reflect Irish history and experiences. He expresses concern over the influence of foreign literature and sensational stories on the youth, arguing for a revival of Irish stories and scholarship that will inspire and educate future generations. Duffy's call to action sets the stage for the overarching theme of the collection: the need for a literary renaissance rooted in the unique identity of the Irish people.
