The Palmer Method of Business Writing

In an age of keyboards and touchscreens, the idea that handwriting could be a competitive advantage seems almost quaint. Yet in 1901, when Austin Palmer published his method, legible penmanship was essential for business success. The Palmer Method revolutionized American handwriting by simplifying the elaborate Spencerian script into something faster, more legible, and teachable to anyone. The key insight: writing flows from the arm, not just the fingers. This simple reframe allowed millions to write quickly without cramping, pain, or the illegibility that still plagues most people's cursive. The method became the standard in American schools and businesses for nearly a century. This republication preserves the original drills and diagrams that trained generations of clerks, secretaries, and entrepreneurs. Whether you want to recover the lost art of beautiful handwriting or simply understand the system that shaped a century of American correspondence, Palmer's 1901 guide remains surprisingly relevant.
