The Little Review, March 1915 (Vol. 2, No. 1)

This March 1915 issue of The Little Review arrives at a remarkable moment in literary history, capturing the Chicago literary renaissance at its most vital. The magazine, which would go on to serialize James Joyce's Ulysses and champion T.S. Eliot and Ezra Pound, here publishes the voices that would define modernism's first flowering. Inside, readers encounter translated poetry that renders the natural world in startling new cadences, essays that debate the future of drama, and critical pieces that reject Victorian caution in favor of artistic radicalism. Margaret C. Anderson's editorial vision pulses through every page: a belief that literature could remake the world, that America needed its own avant-garde, and that the conversation between cultures was essential to artistic renewal. This is a time capsule of intellectual daring, of writers who understood they were witnessing the old order crumble and felt compelled to build something new from the rubble. For anyone curious about where modernism began, this issue offers something precious: the raw, unpolished energy of artists on the verge of transforming literature forever.
