The Little Review, March 1914 (Vol. 1, No. 1)

In March 1914, a small literary magazine emerged from Chicago that would help reshape American letters. The Little Review's inaugural issue announces something new: a commitment to fresh voices, rigorous criticism, and art that challenges convention. This first volume captures a moment when modernism was still insurgent, still hungry, still defining itself against the polite conventions of the Victorian era. Within these pages, readers encounter Sherwood Anderson and John Galsworthy alongside emerging writers and critics, all united in their belief that literature must reflect contemporary life in all its uncomfortable complexity. The poetry here resists sentimentality. The criticism demands honesty over deference. The cultural commentary takes aim at the complacency of the age. What makes this issue remarkable is its audacity. Here is a publication declaring, essentially, that the old ways of writing and thinking about art are exhausted, and something vital must take their place. For anyone interested in where modern literature began, this is a portal, showing American modernism not as a finished movement but as an urgent, experimental project still in its first stirrings.
