The Little Review, January 1915 (Vol. 1, No. 10)

January 1915. Europe is at war, and in Greenwich Village a small magazine gathers the voices that will reshape literature itself. This tenth issue of The Little Review arrives at a hinge moment: Joyce is drafting Ulysses, Pound is forging his Cantos, and Stein is inventing a new American prose. The pages between these covers hold poetry that fractures old forms, essays that interrogate what art means in an age of mechanized slaughter, and dramatic pieces that gesture toward the experimental theater of the coming decade. Here too are the early rumblings of voices that would become canonical, alongside lesser-known contributors whose work captures the restless, searching energy of pre-war modernism. The magazine's mission was audacious then and almost unimaginable now: to create a space where the avant-garde could speak directly to its readers, unmediated by the polite constraints of commercial publishing. Reading this issue is not merely historical curiosity. It is watching a literary revolution in real time, before the cannons fell silent, before the century's horrors fully bloomed. For anyone who wants to understand where modern literature came from, this is where it was being made.
