The Little Review, August 1915 (Vol. 2, No. 5)

The Little Review, August 1915 arrives at a pivotal moment in American letters. This monthly literary magazine, then in its second year under founding editor Margaret Anderson, served as a vital platform for the modernist experiment sweeping across English-language literature. The issue showcases the restless energy of writers and poets who rejected Victorian convention in favor of raw emotion, experimental form, and unflinching engagement with contemporary life. Within these pages, readers encounter essays wrestling with cultural transformation, poetry that breaks from traditional meter, and criticism that challenges artistic orthodoxies. The magazine's mission was nothing less than the reinvention of American literature: championing new voices over established names, privileging artistic courage over commercial safety. For readers today, this issue offers a window into the artistic ferment that would soon produce some of the century's most enduring works. Those drawn to the roots of modernist literature, the history of American publishing, or the artistic movements that shaped the twentieth century will find this issue an essential artifact. It captures a moment when literature was actively debating its own future.
