The Little Review, April 1915 (Vol. 2, No. 2)

In April 1915, as Europe burned in the first full year of the Great War, a small American literary magazine quietly published the opening chapters of what would become the most controversial novel of the twentieth century. That novel was James Joyce's Ulysses, and the magazine was The Little Review. This issue marks the moment Joyce's radical experiment in prose first reached readers, launching a work that would redefine what literature could be and do. Beyond Joyce, the issue gathers the era's most daring voices: Sherwood Anderson, whose stories of American small-town life pointed toward modernism's concerns with alienation and desire; Ezra Pound, the movement's ruthless architect, whose poetic manifestos demanded the destruction of Victorian sentimentality. Here too are essays wrestling with censorship, artistic freedom, and the collision between old moral frameworks and new forms of expression. The Little Review had already been raided for publishing "obscene" material, and would be again. This issue captures a moment of profound cultural rupture, when writers willing to break every rule found a platform willing to publish them. A century later, it remains a time capsule of literary insurgency.
