The History of Lynn, Vol. 1 [of 2]

William Richards undertook a singular mission in the late eighteenth century: to preserve the memory of Lynn, Massachusetts, before the relentless forward march of time erased it. This volume, published near the close of his life, carries its author across nearly two centuries of local history, from the first European settlements through the turbulent years of colonial rebellion and into the young republic's precarious early decades. Richards examines Lynn's evolution with the eye of both a scholar and a partisan, tracing the threads of civic governance, ecclesiastical controversy, commercial enterprise, and martial endeavor that wove together this coastal community. His account captures a town that manufactured shoes for armies, sent sailors to sea, nurtured religious revivals that shook the colonies, and debated independence in meetinghouses that still stood. What emerges is not merely a chronicle of dates and events but a portrait of a place wrestling with the same forces that would define a nation. For readers drawn to early American history, to the texture of small-town life before it vanished, or to the art of historical writing itself, Richards offers an invaluable time capsule, written by a man who knew he was racing against oblivion.
