The Folk-Lore of China: And Its Affinities with That of the Aryan and Semitic Races
1876

In 1876, a British scholar embarked on one of the first systematic attempts to catalogue Chinese folk belief and demonstrate its surprising connections to Western traditions. The result is a remarkable journey through a China where spirits dwell in doorways, dragons govern rainfall, and omens dictate everything from wedding dates to the placement of graves. Dennys documents rituals surrounding birth (demon-frightening cries, fertility flowers, the taboo against rocking empty cradles), marriage (honeyed wine, candle omens, shoes symbolizing the wife's submission), and death (white cock emblems, paper offerings, the terrifying practice of disturbing burials). He traces threads of connection between Chinese practices and those of Aryan and Semitic cultures: a weekly rest day of Persian origin, court astrology resembling European traditions, geomancy echoed in Western divination. The book argues that unlike in the West, where folk belief retreated before science and religion, in China it permeated every level of society from emperor to peasant, preserved in almanacs and cheap print. Part compendium, part comparative argument, this is a window into a world where the supernatural was not marginal but inescapable, and where the boundaries between East and West were far more porous than its era imagined.
