The Fly Leaf, No. 4, Vol. 1, March 1896

This slender magazine pulses with the restless energy of writers determined to shatter Victorian literary convention. Edited by the impassioned Walter Blackburn Harte, The Fly Leaf arrived in March 1896 as a manifesto in pamphlet form: a call for original thought and genuine expression in an age when polite fiction dominated the shelves. Within its pages, readers encounter short fiction that dares to probe psychological depths Victorian novelists typically avoided, poetry experimenting with rhythm and symbol, and essays that argue fiercely for artistic honesty over commercial acceptability. The magazine represents a crucial moment in literary history, the brief flowering of the 'little magazine' tradition that would eventually birth modernism. Though Harte's publication survived only a few years, it published work by writers who would shape twentieth-century literature. For anyone curious about where modern literature truly began, this periodical offers a vivid snapshot of young artists refusing to inherit their elders' tired formulas.
