The Fly Leaf, No. 2, Vol. 1, January 1896

This slim pamphlet periodical captures a precise moment in 1890s radical thought, when Victorian certainties were cracking and a new generation demanded new ideas about gender, society, and the self. Edited by the young and passionate Walter Blackburn Harte, who would die just three years later at 31, The Fly Leaf channels the energy of the "New Woman" movement and its male counterpart into essays, poetry, and whimsical reflections that feel surprisingly urgent. The advocacy here is earnest but not heavy-handed: these are writers who believe another world is possible, and they're writing with the conviction that words might help build it. For readers interested in the intellectual underground that preceded the twentieth century's great social revolutions, this is a genuine artifact, small, imperfect, alive with the hopes of people who refused to accept that the old ways were the only ways.
