The Ecclesiastical Orders of Knighthood

What happens when sword meets sacrament? This meticulously researched mid-20th century study traces the remarkable journey of the Catholic Church's knightly orders from their explosive origins in the Crusades to their modern incarnation as humanitarian institutions. Van der Veldt examines the Orders of the Holy Sepulchre, the Knights of Malta, and other pontifical orders with scholarly precision, revealing how these martial-religious brotherhoods navigated centuries of political upheaval, the Reformation, and the collapse of feudal Europe. The book illuminates not just institutional history but a fundamental question: how does an organization built on holy war adapt to a world that no longer needs knights? The answer lies in their transformation from defenders of Christendom to operators of hospitals, charitable foundations, and diplomatic intermediaries. Essential reading for anyone drawn to the strange, enduring collision of faith and power in medieval and early modern history.
