The Crime of Caste in Our Country

In the turbulent decades following the Civil War, as America rebuilt itself into two starkly unequal nations, Benjamin Rush Davenport issued a searing indictment: the emergence of caste in the land of equality was not merely injustice but crime. Writing with the moral fury of a prophet and the precision of a social scientist, Davenport documents how the promise of Reconstruction gave way to something darker, a systematized hierarchy of race and class that betrayed the nation's founding ideals. He interweaves historical analysis, personal testimony, and psychological insight to show how caste corrupts both its victims and its architects. The result is a book that feels less like a Victorian treatise and more like a dispatch from an ongoing war, one America has yet to win.
