The Construction of the Small House

A practical manual born from an era when Americans desperately needed affordable homes. Written in the volatile post-World War I housing market, this guide addresses a nation grappling with soaring costs and material shortages. Walsh, writing from direct experience in the construction industry, walks readers through the entire process of small house construction: the evolution of wooden-frame methods, the nuts-and-bolts of selecting quality materials, heating systems designed for efficiency, and the often-overlooked details of windows, doors, and landscaping that transform a house into a home. What elevates this beyond a simple how-to manual is its honest grappling with economics. Walsh understood that the dream of homeownership hinged not just on technical know-how but on smart budgeting and understanding real costs. The book remains valuable not as a construction blueprint for modern builders, but as a vivid snapshot of American ambition and ingenuity in an era when building your own home was both necessity and aspiration. For historians of domestic life, architecture enthusiasts, and anyone curious about the roots of American housing culture, this is an indispensable primary source.
