The Church of Sancta Sophia, Constantinople: A Study of Byzantine Building

Published in the late 19th century, this is one of the earliest rigorous English-language studies of the most consequential building in Christian architecture. W.R. Lethaby turns his architectural eye upon Sancta Sophia - the Great Church of Constantinople - examining not merely its staggering beauty but the engineering audacity that made it possible. He traces the building's genesis from Justinian's ambitious commission through its revolutionary construction: the vaulting that seemed to float, the luminous dome suspended over an impossible void, the subtle orchestration of light through fifty-seven windows at the crown. Lethaby writes with the reverence of a pilgrim and the precision of a draftsman, situating this Byzantine masterpiece within the broader sweep of Roman and Eastern architectural traditions. For anyone who has stood beneath that dome and felt time collapse, this book explains the how and the why behind that vertigo. It remains essential reading for architectural historians, Byzantinists, and anyone seeking to understand how a sixth-century emperor and his architects bent physics to spiritual purpose.
