The Canon of the Bible

The Bible wasn't always the Bible. For centuries, religious communities debated which texts deserved sacred status and which would fade into obscurity. Samuel Davidson's landmark 19th-century study traces that contentious, fascinating process. He examines how the Old and New Testaments took shape over centuries of religious debate, political influence, and scholarly discernment: which texts early Christians and Jews embraced, which they rejected, and why certain writings ultimately became canonical while others did not. The work considers the historical contexts, theological disputes, and critical perspectives that shaped biblical collection as we know it. What makes this book endure is its balanced, scholarly approach to a topic that remains sensitive. Davidson presents the evidence without advocating a particular theological position, making it valuable for anyone seeking to understand the historical foundations of biblical literature. Whether you are a theology student, a historian of religion, or a curious reader interested in how sacred texts were compiled, this work offers an accessible yet rigorous examination of one of the most significant processes in Western religious history.
