The Campaigns and History of the Royal Irish Regiment, [v. 1,] from 1684 to…

The Royal Irish Regiment traces its lineage to 1684, and this volume captures the first two centuries of a regiment that fought across continents, from the muddy fields of Europe to the heat of colonial campaigns in India, Africa, and beyond. Gretton, drawing on official records and personal accounts, reconstructs the regiment's participation in major conflicts including the Williamite Wars, the Napoleonic campaigns, and the Crimean War, revealing how a unit forged in Ireland became a fixture of British imperial power. The narrative goes beyond simple battle chronology: Gretton examines the soldiers' conditions, the logistics of moving men across oceans, and the political currents that determined when and where Irish regiments served. This is military history written from the inside, by someone who understood the institutional life of the regiment as both scholar and participant. For readers researching British military organization, Irish military tradition, or specific colonial campaigns, this volume remains a foundational text, offering details unavailable elsewhere and a perspective that later historians have built upon but rarely surpassed.
