The Calvinistic Doctrine of Predestination Examined and Refuted

The central question at the heart of Christian theology: do we choose God, or does God choose us? Hodgson's 19th-century treatise takes aim at one of Protestantism's most controversial doctrines, Calvin's predestination, and argues it distorts both the nature of divine goodness and human moral responsibility. Rather than dismissing Calvinism outright, Hodgson constructs a careful comparative analysis, placing it against the Arminian framework and arguing that the latter preserves what he sees as the essential balance between divine sovereignty and human freedom. This is not mere theological nitpicking; the question of whether election is unconditional and arbitrary strikes at whether belief in a predestining God coheres with a God of love and justice. For readers interested in the intellectual history of Protestantism, or anyone who has wrestled with the tension between providence and free will, this is a fascinating window into how 19th-century Christians debated faith's deepest questions.
