The Astral World—Higher Occult Powers

This book captures the Spiritualist movement at its zenith, when thousands of Americans believed the boundary between life and death was permeable. Joel Tiffany, writing in the early 20th century, presents a philosophical framework for understanding what he calls 'higher occult powers', clairvoyance, mediumship, and spirit healing, not as supernatural gimmicks but as genuine capacities of the human spirit. His lectures attempt to map the organization of the spirit world, describe the condition of souls after death, and explain how certain individuals can serve as conduits between realms. What distinguishes Tiffany's approach is his insistence that these phenomena can be understood systematically, that mediumship represents a legitimate spiritual gift worth developing, and that traditional religious views require updating to accommodate what Spiritualists saw as demonstrable truths about consciousness. For readers interested in the history of the paranormal, the roots of modern New Age spirituality, or the eternal human question of what lies beyond death, this text offers a window into a moment when millions attended seances believing they might actually speak with the departed.
