The Armenians

The Armenians

C. F. Dixon-Johnson

Written in the early twentieth century by a British diplomat, this controversial volume intervenes in one of the era's most volatile political disputes: the so-called 'Armenian Question' that would soon culminate in catastrophe. Dixon-Johnson mounts a vigorous defense of British diplomatic strategy in the Near East, arguing that Western powers, in their eagerness to champion Christian minorities against Ottoman rule, sacrificed a valuable alliance and destabilized a region that had known centuries of relative peace. He contends that well-meaning British idealists, by inspiring Armenian populations with 'impracticable aspirations,' set in motion events that led inevitably to disaster. The text challenges the dominant Western narrative of the period, which portrayed Armenians as victims of systematic Turkish brutality, instead presenting a more complex picture of mutual suspicion, rival ambitions, and diplomatic failure. Though historically discredited and deeply controversial, the work remains a artifact of Edwardian British imperialism and its struggle to reconcile humanitarian impulses with geopolitical realpolitik.
