The Archives of Dentistry, Vol. VII, No. 4, April 1890

A frozen moment in the history of medicine, this April 1890 issue of The Archives of Dentistry offers modern readers an extraordinary window into a profession still finding its footing. The techniques discussed here predate X-rays, antibiotics, and modern anesthesia by decades. Practitioners write about tooth extraction with carbolic acid, the challenges of dental anesthesia, and the emerging field of prosthetic dentistry. The language is formal, precise, and occasionally startling to contemporary sensibilities. For anyone curious about how medicine evolved, these pages reveal a world where dentists were part surgeon, part craftsman, and pioneers wrestling with pain in ways we can barely imagine. This volume captures not just dental technique, but a moment when dentistry was becoming a profession worthy of its own archive.
