The Architectural Review and American Builders' Journal, Aug. 1869

This August 1869 issue of The Architectural Review and American Builders' Journal captures a pivotal moment in American architecture. The Civil War has been over for four years, and the nation is rebuilding, expanding, and grappling with questions of cultural identity. The writers gathered here were not merely cataloging buildings; they were arguing about what American architecture should become. The journal's essayists tackle the eternal tension between fashion and permanence in building, observing how tastes shift like weather patterns, yet insisting that some principles of good design transcend mere trend. Technical discussions of roofs, materials, and construction methods sit alongside broader meditations on taste, revealing a profession working to articulate a distinctly American architectural voice free from European deference. This is primary source material for anyone interested in how Americans thought about buildings during a crucial period of national transformation.
