The American Spirit in the Writings of Americans of Foreign Birth

In the early 1920s, a nation grappling with unprecedented immigration assembled this vital collection: the voices of those who had crossed oceans to build new lives, and the children who grew up translating for their parents. These writers of foreign birth grappled with questions that still haunt America today: What does it mean to become American? Can you carry two homelands in your heart? This anthology gathers essays, memoirs, and reflections from immigrants and their descendants, capturing the particular anguish and exhilaration of belonging fully to neither old world nor new. The writers here arrived with little but hope, and their words trace the uneven terrain of assimilation, the weight of foreign accents, the strange grief of becoming someone new. Some wrote with fierce patriotism, others with sharp critique, all with the intimacy of those who had lived the experience rather than theorized it. What emerges is not a single American story but a chorus of them, restless and resonant, arguing that the nation's spirit has always been shaped by those who arrived as strangers.
