The American Missionary — Volume 37, No. 6, June 1883

This June 1883 issue of The American Missionary arrives at a pivotal moment in American history, just years after Reconstruction collapsed and the nation began its long retreat from racial justice. The American Missionary Association, founded by abolitionists who had risked everything to end slavery, had by then established hundreds of schools and churches across the South and worked extensively with Indigenous communities. This periodical captures that organization at a critical juncture: still hopeful, still publishing passionate appeals for support, but increasingly anxious about the tide of white supremacy engulfing the country their sacrifices had helped redeem. The issue blends field reports from teachers and ministers on the ground with broader arguments about America's moral obligations. Readers encounter specific classrooms where formerly enslaved people learned to read, churches building communities under difficult circumstances, and the persistent plea for financial support from readers distant from these struggles. The writing carries the earnest, often paternalistic tone of its era, yet also documents genuine resistance and hope. For historians and general readers alike, this periodical functions as a primary source of enormous value. It shows Americans grappling with questions that still echo today: what does justice require of a nation? How do you build equity when the broader society resists? The answers, partial and imperfect, live in these pages.
