The American Missionary — Volume 35, No. 4, April, 1881

A vital window into the messy, hopeful, and often heartbreaking work of Black uplift in the decade after Reconstruction. This April 1881 issue of the American Missionary Association's publication captures a moment when the promise of emancipation was already giving way to the grinding reality of Jim Crow. You'll find dispatches from teachers in Southern schools, fundraising appeals, reports on 'freedmen' communities, and the association's impassioned arguments for educational access. The prose is earnest, occasionally paternalistic, and occasionally deeply moving. For historians of race, religion, and education in America, these pages offer something rare: the unfiltered voice of an organization caught between progressive idealism and the limitations of its time. This isn't a narrative. It's evidence. And it's indispensable.
