Tales of the Sun; Or, Folklore of Southern India

This collection captures the living oral traditions of Southern India, brought to English readers in the late Victorian era through a remarkable collaboration between British collector Georgiana Kingscote and Pandit Natêsa Sástrî. These aren't sterile museum pieces but vibrant tales that once circulated among villages, courts, and households across the Madras Presidency, carrying the wit, warning, and wonder of a rich cultural world. The stories range from comic misunderstandings to explorations of sacred tradition. "The Three Deaf Men" shows how simple miscommunication spirals into absurd adventure, while "Why Brâhmans Cannot Eat in the Dark" reveals the intertwining of faith, food, and the supernatural in daily life. Throughout runs a persistent tension between cunning and virtue, human folly and divine intervention. These are stories where cleverness is rewarded, where the gods meddle in mortal affairs, and where ancient customs carry weight enough to shape lives. For readers curious about the subcontinent's storytelling heritage, this offers something rare: not a scholarly anthology but a window into how Southern Indians once made sense of their world through narrative. Those interested in folklore, colonial-era cross-cultural collaboration, or the roots of Indian literary tradition will find genuine rewards here.
