Sweet Clover: Harvesting and Thrashing the Seed Crop

Published in the final years of the First World War, when American farmers faced unprecedented pressure to feed a nation at war, this slender guide captures knowledge that would soon vanish. H. S. Coe wrote for practical farmers who needed results, not theory. Here is the hard-won wisdom of an earlier generation: how to time the harvest precisely so seed heads shatter at the right moment, how to thrash without losing half your yield to the wind, and why sweet clover was once considered one of the most valuable forage crops in American agriculture. The prose is spare and immediate, written by someone who had clearly spent years in the field. For modern readers drawn to homesteading, sustainable agriculture, or the history of American farming, this pamphlet offers something rare: a direct window into rural knowledge that predates industrial farming. It asks us to consider what we have lost and what might still be worth reclaiming.
