Studies and Exercises in Formal Logic

Originally published in 1881, this rigorous textbook systematically builds a foundation in formal logic from the ground up. Keynes walks the reader through the architecture of valid reasoning: the nature of terms and propositions, the structure of syllogisms, the logic of conditional and hypothetical judgments, and the principles of inference. What distinguishes this work is its dual emphasis on exposition and practice. Each theoretical chapter is paired with exercises designed to train the mind in precise thinking, making it as much a manual as a treatise. The fourth edition, substantially revised over the original, addresses contemporary criticisms and refines its treatment of existential import and negative names. For the modern reader, the book offers something rare: a disciplined approach to thinking clearly in an age of fuzzy reasoning. Whether you are a philosophy student, a mathematician, or simply someone who wants to reason better, this Victorian-era masterclass in logic provides the conceptual tools to do exactly that.
