Storyology: Essays in Folk-Lore, Sea-Lore, and Plant-Lore

In an age when scholars dismissed folklore as primitive superstition, Benjamin Taylor insisted these humble stories deserved serious attention. He challenges the notion that myths merely reflect natural phenomena, arguing instead that they spring from something far more interesting: the collective imagination and lived experience of ordinary people. His skepticism toward academic orthodoxies gives these essays a refreshing independence of thought, and his prose rewards careful reading. The collection moves through folk tales, sea legends, and plant lore with a scholar's rigor and a storyteller's feeling for what makes a narrative endure. Taylor demonstrates that the "trivial" tales dismissed by learned men carry profound significance about human nature and cultural history. He bridges the gap between specialist folklore study and the curious general reader, making complex ideas accessible without condescension. The result is a book that treats its subject with genuine intellectual seriousness while remaining thoroughly readable.
