Sixty Years a Bookman, With Other Recollections and Reflections

A warm, rambling memoir from a man who spent six decades surrounded by books. Joseph Shaylor, a British bookseller, traces his journey from apprentice to respected trade veteran, offering glimpses into a world that has largely vanished: the dusty backrooms where rare editions changed hands, the relationships between bookseller and collector, the quiet negotiations that defined a gentlemanly trade. He writes with evident affection for his profession, yet he's not blind to its quirks or contradictions. Shaylor observes the changing landscape of publishing with a mix of melancholy and acceptance, watching as newer methods begin to displace the old ways he knew so well. His anecdotes range from the humorous to the poignant, capturing the particular magic of a good bookstore and the men and women who dedicated their lives to connecting readers with books. For anyone who has ever felt the gravitational pull of a well-stocked shelf, this memoir offers a window into bookselling's golden age, rendered by someone who understood its mysteries intimately.
