Sanitation of Mofussil Bazaars

A remarkable time capsule of British colonial public health administration, this 1920s manual documents the sanitary conditions of India's provincial bazaars, the chaotic, vital market centers where daily commerce and overcrowding created urgent health concerns. G. W. Disney, writing as a colonial health official, offers practical guidance on waste removal, water supply, market layout, and the prevention of epidemic disease in spaces where thousands mingled daily. The text reveals both the technical challenges of sanitation in pre-independence India and the particular blind spots of British administrative thinking. What emerges is not merely a guide to drains and refuse collection, but a snapshot of how colonial authorities understood and attempted to manage the public health of spaces they fundamentally misunderstood. For historians of medicine, urban planners, and anyone curious about the hidden infrastructure of everyday life in colonial India, this obscure document offers surprisingly vivid glimpses into the bazaars that sustained Indian economic life.
