Saddle Room Songs and Hunting Ballads

These are poems written in a vanishing world. Frederick C. Palmer's 1907 collection captures the blood-warm thrill of the hunt, the thunder of hooves across green English fields, the cry of the hounds. But beneath the exhilaration runs a deeper current: the recognition that these moments are finite, that the horsemen and their mounts age, that the empty loose-box awaits. The ballads here celebrate the joy of the chase, the camaraderie of the saddle, the beauty of horses like Snowflake whose loyalty becomes legend. Yet each poem carries the shadow of what will be remembered and what will be lost. Palmer writes with tenderness about the squire's daughter, with adrenaline about the hunt, and with quiet devastation about the things that do not return. This is not merely sporting verse. It is an elegy for a way of life, rendered in the language of those who lived it.
