Russian Folk-Tales

These are not the sanitized fairy tales of Victorian nurseries. Afanas'ev gathered his stories from peasants, wanderers, and village storytellers across the vast Russian empire, preserving tales where Frost himself tests the worthy, where a frog may wear a royal crown, and where the Firebird's stolen feather ignites quests across three kingdoms. Nearly 600 stories in all, drawn from Russian, Ukrainian, and Belarusian traditions, each one carrying the raw magic and moral weight of oral tradition. Here heroes are cunning rather than noble, villains are often outwitted but rarely reformed, and the line between this world and the next dissolves at the forest's edge. These are the stories that taught generations of Russians how to survive loss, how to value wit over strength, how to find home even in the darkest woods. They influenced writers from Pushkin to Bulgakov, and they remain some of the most electrifying folk narratives in the world.
