Rogers' Directory of Norwich and Neighbourhood

Step inside Norwich as it stood in the mid-nineteenth century: a city of spires and smoke, of craftsmen and clergy, of streets whose names still mark the map today. Rogers' Directory is neither novel nor chronicle but something rarer: a complete portrait of an English city at the height of its Victorian confidence. Here are the tradesmen who fed and clothed the city, the churches where Norwich prayed, the monumental brasses that recorded its dead. Here too are the villages surrounding the city, their own modest economies and ancient churches. For the historian, this is an indispensable primary source. For the genealogist, it's a mine of names and addresses. For the curious reader, it's a time machine - a chance to walk down Market Place when it still rang with the voices of actual butchers, bakers, and banking clerks, to trace your finger across a city whose bones are still visible beneath the modern one.
