Project Hail Mary is a science fiction novel by Andy Weir, published in 2021. The story follows Ryland Grace, a junior high school science teacher and former molecular biologist, who wakes up alone on a spacecraft with no memory of who he is or how he got there. His only companions are two desiccated corpses and a computer that won't stop asking him math questions. As Grace's memories slowly return, he discovers he is humanity's last hope. Earth's sun is dimming due to an alien microorganism called Astrophage, and he has been sent on a one-way mission to the Tau Ceti system to find a solution before the resulting ice age renders Earth uninhabitable. What he finds there—an unlikely alliance with an alien engineer from a different star system facing the same crisis—transforms what could have been a bleak survival story into an exuberant tale of friendship, problem-solving, and sacrifice. The novel won the 2022 Audie Award for Audiobook of the Year and was a finalist for the Hugo Award for Best Novel. It reached #1 on the New York Times bestseller list and has been adapted into a 2026 film starring Ryan Gosling, directed by Phil Lord and Christopher Miller.

About Project Hail Mary
Chapter Summaries
- Chapter 1
- A man wakes up with amnesia, unable to see, hear, or move properly, and is repeatedly asked 'What's two plus two?' by a computer. He slowly regains control of his body and discovers he's naked, connected to tubes, and in an oval bed in a strange room with two other dead crewmates. He realizes he doesn't know his own name.
- Chapter 2
- The protagonist, now calling himself 'Pendulus,' uses a makeshift pendulum to measure the high gravity, concluding he's not on Earth or in a centrifuge, but in space. He recalls a fragmented memory of his friend Marissa discussing the 'Petrova line' and the sun's decreasing output, hinting at a global crisis.
- Chapter 3
- Ryland Grace, a middle school science teacher, recalls his recruitment by Eva Stratt, head of the Petrova Taskforce. Stratt seeks his expertise due to his controversial paper on non-water-based life, tasking him with studying the alien microbe 'Astrophage' that is causing the sun to dim.
Key Themes
- Survival and Sacrifice

- Scientific Inquiry and Problem-Solving
- The book celebrates the scientific method, critical thinking, and ingenuity. Ryland constantly applies scientific principles, conducts experiments, and collaborates with Rocky to understand and combat the Astrophage, showcasing science as humanity's greatest tool for overcoming challenges.
- First Contact and Interspecies Communication
- A significant portion of the story details the first encounter between humans and intelligent aliens. The challenges and triumphs of establishing communication, understanding different biologies and cultures, and forming a partnership are central to the plot's development and emotional depth.
