
Andy Weir (born June 16, 1972) is an American novelist and former software engineer known for meticulously researched hard science fiction. He grew up in Livermore, California, the son of a physicist at Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory and an electrical engineer. After studying computer science at UC San Diego, he spent two decades as a programmer at companies including AOL, Palm, and Blizzard Entertainment. Weir began writing science fiction in his twenties, self-publishing stories on his personal website. His debut novel The Martian (2011) started as a free web serial before becoming a Kindle bestseller and then a New York Times #1 bestseller after being picked up by Crown Publishing. The 2015 film adaptation, directed by Ridley Scott and starring Matt Damon, grossed over $630 million worldwide. His second novel Artemis (2017), set on the Moon, received mixed reviews. His third novel Project Hail Mary (2021) was met with widespread acclaim, winning the 2022 Audie Award for Audiobook of the Year and earning a Hugo Award nomination for Best Novel. The film adaptation, starring Ryan Gosling and directed by Phil Lord and Christopher Miller, was released in March 2026. Weir lives in California with his wife Ashley and their son.
