Prefaces and Prologues to Famous Books: With Introductions, Notes and Illustrations

The preface is where an author drops the mask. In these fragments, the world's greatest writers shed their public personas, speaking directly to readers with an intimacy their main texts rarely permit. Charles W. Eliot's curated collection gathers the introductions, prefaces, and prologues from landmark works across centuries, presenting them as vital literature in their own right. Here readers encounter Caxton and other masters not as distant figures but as living voices revealing their hopes, anxieties, and artistic intentions. These pieces transcend their original contexts, offering a window into how authors understood their own work and the relationship between writer and reader. For the devoted reader, the literary scholar, or anyone curious about the machinery behind the magic, this collection illuminates the most personal act in literature: the moment an author speaks plainly about what they have made and why.
