Portraits of Women

Gamaliel Bradford's 1916 collection offers something rare: psychological portraits rather than mere biographies. He calls them "psychographs" - attempts to excavate the inner lives of remarkable women rather than simply catalog their achievements. In doing so, he captures what facts alone cannot: the tensions, contradictions, and private battles that made these women extraordinary. The subjects range across centuries and spheres, each portrait seeking to understand not just what these women did, but who they were when no one was watching. Bradford openly grapples with the inherent challenges of his project - the difficulty of truly knowing lives lived in different eras, the biases any biographer brings to their subject. Yet this vulnerability makes the portraits more compelling, not less. The book opens with Lady Mary Wortley Montagu, whose wit, advocacy for smallpox inoculation, and refusal to be contained by any single role Bradford explores with equal measure. He finds both humor and tragedy in her story, setting the tone for a collection that treats its subjects as complex human beings rather than monuments. The result is a window into how an early twentieth-century mind attempted to understand female greatness - with all the limitations and insights that entails.
