Poisonous Snakes of Kansas

A scientific field guide from the late 1950s, this book was written for the general reader curious about Kansas's venomous reptiles. Robert F. Clarke, drawing on mid-century herpetological research, provides detailed identification guidance for the state's poisonous snakes - primarily various rattlesnakes and the copperhead. The text tackles widespread misconceptions about these creatures, replacing folklore with careful observation. Clarke emphasizes the ecological role these snakes play and advocates for their protection, reflecting a conservation sensibility ahead of its time. For naturalists, historians of science, and anyone intrigued by how earlier generations understood the natural world, this guide offers a window into mid-20th century American attitudes toward wildlife.
