Place Names in Kent

Every place name is a time capsule. In Kent, the oldest English county, the very words we use to navigate our world carry Roman legions, Saxon settlers, and forgotten tongues beneath their modern surfaces. J.W. Horsley, writing in 1921, was among the first to systematically excavate these linguistic layers, tracing how Canterbury emerged from Celtic roots, how Roman roads left their mark on village names, and how the Anglo-Saxons layered their own meanings onto an ancient landscape. This slim volume is not merely a catalogue of etymology but a portal into a Kent that existed long before postcode districts or garden suburbs. Horsley writes with the pleasure of a man who has discovered secrets in familiar places, and his discoveries transform ordinary towns into palimpsests of conquest and survival. For anyone who has ever wondered why English places sound the way they do, or who senses that history hides in the most mundane geography, this book offers both answers and deeper questions.
