On the Curability of Certain Forms of Insanity, Epilepsy, Catalepsy, and…

This 1866 medical treatise documents one of the darkest chapters in the history of women's healthcare. Isaac Baker Brown, a respected Victorian surgeon, argued that hysteria, epilepsy, catalepsy, and various forms of insanity in women originated from irritation of the reproductive organs and could be cured through surgical intervention. The text presents detailed case histories of female patients who underwent clitoridectomy and other procedures at Brown's London Surgical Home, documenting their symptoms before and alleged recovery after operations. Brown was a prominent figure who served as president of the Medical Society of London, lending his work an air of legitimacy that made it all the more disturbing. Today, the book stands as a harrowing artifact of Victorian medical practice, revealing how women's complaints were systematically pathologized and their bodies subjected to invasive procedures rooted in pseudoscientific theories of female anatomy. It remains essential reading for anyone studying the history of medicine, feminist history, or the evolution of psychiatric treatment.
