Ojibwa myths and tales

Geo. E. Laidlaw

Before Superman, before Loki, there was Nanabush. This collection gathers Ojibwa (Anishinaabe) myths and legends from the forests and lakes of Ontario, preserving stories that had been told aloud for centuries before anyone thought to write them down. The trickster-hero Nanabush appears in many forms: a cunning fool who outwits giants and witches, a culture-bringer who teaches humans how to live, and a fool whose foolishness sometimes saves him and sometimes nearly destroys him. Alongside him thunder the Thunderbirds, vast and terrible, whose battles with the underwater creatures of the great lakes shake the world. These are not mere entertainment. Each story carries moral weight, explains the shape of the land, or remembers a time when the boundary between human and spirit worlds was thin. Laidlaw recorded these tales from the Rama Reserve in the early twentieth century, catching them before they faded. What remains is a window into an ancient worldview, where cedar trees have souls, the seasons are governed by cosmic struggle, and the smallest act can carry eternal consequence. For readers seeking the roots of North American storytelling, this is essential ground.
