Moses, not Darwin

In 1871, as Darwin's theory of evolution stirred Victorian England, a rector named B. G. Johns took to the pulpit to deliver a passionate defense of biblical creation. This is not a dry theological treatise but a roaring sermon, one that grapples fearlessly with the most explosive scientific debate of the era. Johns argues that humanity bears God's image, not the legacy of lower creatures, and that the human soul carries a divine essence that mere biology cannot explain. He dismantles the idea that humans emerged from 'inferior beings,' insisting instead that we are purposeful creations meant for spiritual elevation. The text crackles with the urgency of a man defending his faith against the rising tide of materialism. For readers interested in the historical clash between science and religion, or anyone curious about how Victorian believers processed Darwin's challenge, this sermon offers an intimate window into an era of profound intellectual upheaval.
