Moore's common-place book and journal [manuscript], ca. 1803
1803
Holograph Title from spine A commonplace book, approximately 50 leaves [100 pages] of this volume contain quotations and excerpts of numerous works in Latin, Greek, and English, all in the hand of Thomas Moore. The final 11 leaves [22 pages], whose text runs in the opposite direction and begins at the back of the book, contain notes, in English, about Moore's travels through North America. The first of these travel notes are dated July 4th [1803?], as the author is leaving New York City for Albany. There are two leaves, between the two sections, that contain both excerpted quotations and travel notes, each of which are written in opposing directions and on differing halves of the pages Quarterbound in vellum and papier tourniquet over boards (as described by Wolfe in Marbled papers). The spine contains a green leather label with the title of the volume stamped in gilt. The original marbled wrappers are bound-in, with a dealer's description tipped-in at front. The embossed stamp of the Library is present on the final leaf of front endpapers
