Monthly supplement of the penny magazine of the Society for the Diffusion of…

This is the monthly supplement to the Penny Magazine, the revolutionary Victorian publication launched in 1832 by the Society for the Diffusion of Useful Knowledge. At one penny per issue, it brought the marvels of the age to working-class readers across Britain: natural history, scientific discoveries, poetry, biography, illustrations of machinery, and glimpses of the wider world. The supplement expanded on the magazine's mission, offering deeper explorations of topics that mattered to a newly literate public hungry for knowledge. Reading these pages is stepping into a Britain remaking itself through print, where a shilling could buy hours of wonder and a young nation debated what every citizen deserved to know. For historians of publishing, students of Victorian culture, or anyone curious about how information first became democratic, this supplement captures a pivotal moment when books and magazines ceased to be luxuries and began to belong to everyone.
