Mississippi Piney Woods: A Photographic Study of Folk Architecture

Black

This is a book that asks you to look closely at walls and roofs and understand a people. The Mississippi Piney Woods, that sweeping corridor of long-leaf pine stretching from Natchez to the Gulf, was settled by hunters, graziers, and drifters who built with what the forest gave them: hewn logs, hand-split clapboards,杉木柱. Black's photographs capture these structures with the patience of an archaeologist and the eye of an artist. You see dogtrot cabins where families breathed the same air as their livestock, simple churches where communities gathered on hard benches, and corncribs standing like sentinels in overgrown fields. The text traces the migration paths from the Carolinas and Georgia after the Treaty of Mount Dexter opened Choctaw lands, rendering a portrait of people who valued land for its timber and range, not its tillage. These buildings were never meant to impress. They were meant to last. That they survived for Black's camera is a small miracle. For anyone who believes architecture tells stories words cannot, this is essential viewing.
