Book digitized by Google from the library of Oxford University and uploaded to the Internet Archive by user tpb. Apparently based on the French translation by Aubert de Vitry of books I-XV, all that had so far appeared in Germany. In the English translation, the books of the original work are denoted "chapters." The translator's "work, it appears, is done from the French, and shows subtractions, and what is worse, additions."--Carlyle, Crit. and miscell. essays, New York, 1872, vol. I, p. 178 An American edition, with imprint: New York, Collins and Hannay ... and Collins and co., appeared in the same year, and was reissued in 1844 by Collins & Hannay. cf.
